Investing in our Future: Can capitalism save the planet? #70

Can capitalism and financial markets be a force for good? Rob Gardner certainly thinks so. Rob Gardner has a background in investment banking and pension funds, but the founder and CEO of Rebalance Earth—an equity fund manager that invests in nature-based solutions—believes that by redirecting capital towards the right things can help to create and maintain a world worth living in.

That background in pensions has given Rob a long-term outlook, one in which he thinks about things in ‘decades, not days’, but his concern for the planet has also been shaped by his time on the Alpine Glacier project 25 years ago.

During this fascinating and in-depth conversation, Rob and Bethan discuss the critical subject of tackling climate change and how where we invest our money can make a difference. They also cover:

  • How capitalism can be a force for good, but that it requires reorienting inputs and investments towards sustainable practices and nature conservation.
  • The connection between localised climate change impacts and the broader Net Zero agenda.
  • The need to invest pension funds should invest in nature-based solutions to address climate change and nature loss.
  • The importance of long-term vision in politics and finance.
